What is the date duration

Date duration refers to the total time that has passed between two different dates. The duration is usually measured in years, months, weeks, and days. For example, If you need to know how much time has passed between February 7, 2025, and March 15, 2022, the result would be like this: Total Days: 1062, Total Weeks: 151.71, Total Months: 34.89, Total Years: 2.91, Entire Duration: 2 years, 10 months, and 27 days.

How to calculate manually

If you want to calculate the duration between two dates without using a calculator, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Write the date in YYYY-MM-DD (Year-Month-Day) format. For example, if you calculate the duration between March 18, 2021, and September 5, 2023, write it as 2023-09-05 – 2021-03-18.

Step 2: Now subtract the days; if the day of the end date is greater than the start date, subtract; if the end date is a smaller value, borrow days from the months column.

Step 3: Next, subtract the months; subtract the values if the month’s end date is greater than the start date. If it is smaller, borrow 12 months from the year; for example, September (9) – March (3) = 6 months.

Step 4: Finally, subtract the years since the end year exceeds the start year. Subtract the value; 2023−2021=2 years. This means the total difference between the two dates is 2 years, 5 months, and 18 days.

Table 1 shows date duration to most common U.S. schedules like Tax Season, Summer Break, Thanksgiving Week, Year-End Holidays, Labour Day Weekend, and Memorial Day Weekend.
